Every year, the wedding industry announces the colours and styles we’re all supposed to love. This year it’s citrus tones. Last year it was terracotta. Next year — who knows?
Here’s the thing: your wedding photos will last far longer than any trend. You’re one of a kind, so why make your wedding day look like everyone else’s that year?
Trends Are Fun. But They’re Not Forever
Trends are designed to be short-lived. That’s what keeps the industry churning. But do you really want to look back in ten years and say, “Oh yes, we got married in the year of the pampas grass”? (cringe)
Your wedding should feel like you, not like a Pinterest board of what was hot that season.
Meaningful Beats “On Trend” Every Time
The most memorable weddings I’ve designed are the ones where couples chose flowers and colours that reflected their story.
The couple who used lilac because it represented a lost loved one, and was their way of incorporating that person into their special day.
The bride who wanted cascading orchids because they were her late grandmother’s favourite.
The groom who asked for “wild and all native” florals because staying true to his environmental commitment was the most important factor when it came to the flowers.
None of these choices were “trending”, and that’s exactly why they were so special.
Here’s My Advice:
Use trends as inspiration, not a rulebook. If you love something that happens to be “in,” great, but choose it because it lights you up, not because it’s everywhere right now. And expect me to give you a little challenge on your choices, I always want to know why a couple have chosen what they have, what is the motivation, and is there anything else they haven’t considered that might actually mean a whole lot more than the masses of white reflexed roses!
The Bottom Line
Trends will fade, and often fast.
Your photos, and your memories, will stay.
Choose flowers and colours that feel timeless, meaningful, and completely, unapologetically you.
As I say, on repeat, It’s your love story! nobody else’s.
